Mexican Ends Up In Coma After Boxing Knockout
After her welterweight bout on Saturday, Jeanette Zacarias Zapata was stretchered out of the ring after being knocked out in brutal fashion by Marie Pier Houle.
The 18-year-old was caught by a left uppercut and a right hook at the end of the fourth round, leaving her unconscious inside the ring.
Unable to recover from the blow, Zapata began to go into convulsions and was taken away in a stretcher before being placed into a medically-induced coma to relax her body and brain.
Zapata’s opponent Houle, was also affected by the incident, taking to her Facebook account on Monday.
“Boxing carries a lot of risks and dangers”, she said.
“This is our job, our passion.”
“Never is intention to seriously hurt an opponent part of my plans.”
Yvon Michel, promoter of the fight, reported on the condition of the 18-year-old Mexican fighter after she was taken to hospital.
“The doctors didn’t give her much of a chance [to get out] initially, but they find her situation has improved a lot,” the promoter said.
“The next two to five days will be critical and she will be kept sedated for that period.”
“The next six weeks will then be critical in determining if there is damage and how much damage it has.”
