Rafael Nadal arrived in Palma de Mallorca on Monday afternoon for an event linked to his Foundation.

The tennis star, who was signed up for the Monte Carlo Masters 1000 (April 9 to 16) which was confirmed by the organization last week through the tournament’s social media channels, was unable to confirm his participation in the tournament.

“I’m following my course and I don’t know when I’ll play again, that’s the truth. I’m in a phase of increasing work. If I knew when I was going to come back I would say so, but I don’t know,” the Spaniard said, when asked about his current status.

“I can’t confirm that I will play in Monte Carlo, things are being seen day by day. I prefer to say things when I really know them.”

If Nadal confirms his participation in the tournament, he must take into consideration the possibility of being tasked with playing six matches in close succession.

Despite his superstar status, he will not be exempt from the first round as he is not one of the top eight seeds.

Injury struggles

The champion of 22 major tournaments is currently recovering from an injury sustained to his left leg which has forced him to bow out of competitions such as Doha, Dubai, an exhibition in Las Vegas and Indian Wells.

Nadal has set his sights on a flying comeback for his favoured Roland Garros (May 28 to June 11) and will not rush a return to tournament tennis if it means risking his fitness for the second ‘Grand Slam’ of the tennis calendar.
