Alexander Zverev beat Rafael Nadal 6-4, 6-4 in the quarter finals and knocked the Spaniard out of the Madrid Open.

This was Nadal’s 42nd defeat on clay and Zverev became only the 19th opponent to beat him on what is his favourite surface.

In his last participation in the Madrid Open in 2019, Nadal reached the semi-finals of the tournament where he was beaten by Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Zverev, who won the tournament one year earlier, earned his third successive victory against Nadal to reach his second Madrid Open semi final.

The German came back from 4-2 down in the first set to manage his first ever victory against the Spaniard on clay.

Nadal will now have time to prepare for the Italian Open, while Zverev will attempt to win his second title this season after clinching the Mexican Open.
