Lagos Tourism Ministry Takes Second Batch Of Interns On Cultural Heritage Tour
…Visit to J. Randle centre and freedom park deepens interns’ knowledge of Yoruba history and culture
The second batch of interns at the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, on Wednesday, 12th August 2026, embarked on a familiarisation tour of the J. Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History and Freedom Park, Lagos, as part of efforts to deepen their understanding of the State’s rich cultural heritage.
The tour was led by the Chief Executive, Administration and Human Resources, Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Ojo Sherifat, alongside other members of staff.
At the J. Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History, the interns were taken through various aspects of Yoruba civilisation, including spirituality, traditional beliefs, craftsmanship, family life, indigenous fabrics, commerce, royalty, music and entertainment.
The tour guide, Mr. Oluwarotimi, introduced the interns to the significance of Odu Ifa and its connection to Yoruba ethics, values, wisdom and the interpretation of life’s mysteries. The interns also learnt about Yoruba perspectives on the creation of the world and the roles attributed to Olodumare, Obatala, Oduduwa and Ifa, as well as the significance of Ori Inu as the seat of destiny.
At Freedom Park, the interns were received by the tour guide, Mr. Daniel, who highlighted the historical significance of the site, which was formerly a colonial prison.
He explained how the site was transformed from a prison and dumping ground into a vibrant cultural and recreational centre. The interns were also briefed on the significance of various structures within the park and its connection to Nigeria’s historical development and the struggle for independence.
The familiarisation tour reflects the Ministry’s commitment to building the capacity of young professionals and fostering a strong sense of cultural identity among the next generation of tourism and culture practitioners.
The initiative forms part of the Ministry’s internship programme, designed to provide interns with practical exposure to Lagos’ rich cultural heritage while deepening their understanding of the tourism, arts and creative sectors of the State.
Through such experiences, the Ministry continues to equip young professionals with the knowledge and appreciation needed to become effective custodians and promoters of Lagos’ cultural heritage.
