The US Open begins Monday under an injury cloud with many of the big names not playing. But event goes on and Monday night features the most anticipated match of the first round as World No. 2 Simona Halep takes on 2006 winner Maria Sharapova who returns to Grand Slam tennis after over a year and half.
Sharapova has won all six meetings over the Romanian.
Earlier in the day, Wimbledon champ Garbine Muguruza will lead a parade of Grand Slam winners in the afternoon.
20-year-old phenom Alexander Zverev debuts his powerful game against Darian King of Barbados. Zverev has won 10 of his last 11 but has never made a Slam quarterfinal.
Elsewhere on the grounds, the top American men are on court with John Isner, Sam Querrey, Steven Johnson and Jack Sock all in action.
Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova opens play on temporary Armstrong against former finalist and World No. 1 Jelena Jankovic.
