But event goes on and Monday night features the most anticipated match of the first round as World No. 2 Simona Halep takes on 2006 winner Maria Sharapova who returns to Grand Slam tennis after over a year and half.
Sharapova has won all six meetings over the Romanian.
Earlier in the day, Wimbledon champ Garbine Muguruza will lead a parade of Grand Slam winners in the afternoon.
20-year-old phenom Alexander Zverev debuts his powerful game against Darian King of Barbados. Zverev has won 10 of his last 11 but has never made a Slam quarterfinal.
Elsewhere on the grounds, the top American men are on court with John Isner, Sam Querrey, Steven Johnson and Jack Sock all in action.
Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova opens play on temporary Armstrong against former finalist and World No. 1 Jelena Jankovic.
