Giro d’Italia 2021: The Favourites To Win The Pink Jersey, From Egan Bernal to Simon Yates

The Giro d’Italia 2021 is set to start on May 8 and we’ve taken a look at five riders who are favourites to take home the pink jersey in three weeks’ time.

Now it’s time to look at the individuals.

• Simon Yates

British rider Yates comes in to the competition is good form and has come close to victory in Italy before. He is extremely determined to come out on top this year, and could be at the peak of his powers at 28 years of age. After an impressive performance at the Tour of the Alps, many are tipping him for glory this month in Italy.

• Egan Bernal

The Colombian rider is hoping to overcome his back problems this year and build on his podium finishes at the Tour de la Provence, Strade Bianche, and Tirreno-Adriatico. On his day he is one of the top climbers in the sport and will be looking to work well with his teammates to claim glory.

• Remco Evenepoel

The 21-year-old will be making his Grand Tour debut in Italy. He is very strong in time trials which will work massively in his favour, but hasn’t raced competitively since August last year. Whether he can perform to his best remains to be seen.

• Alexander Vlasov

The young Russian has the kind of character you need to come out on top in such a gruelling event and comes to Italy in good form after finishing second at Paris-Nice and in third position in the Tour of the Alps. He’ll be racing in a familiar setting after already having competed in Italy at junior and Under-23 level.

• Hugh Carthy

The British rider has been getting better and better and his aggressive climbing secured him a podium finish La Vuelta last year. Many have tipped him to better this third place finish in this year’s Giro, with the eight mountain finishes in Italy working to his advantage.
