Federer Requires Surgery and His Season Is Over
Roger Federer has announced that he will undergo surgery on his knee, ending his season.
The Swiss star broke the news himself on social media, ending, for now, doubts and speculation about his condition and future.
Federer, 40, hasn’t competed since being beaten by Hubert Hurkacz in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon and it seems he will almost definitely not be back on court until 2022.
The questions about his condition had been growing in recent weeks, especially since he announced he would not compete first in the Olympics and then the US Open.
In a video on Instagram Federer informed fans of his decision and its consequences, while also looking ahead to the future.
“For the medium to long term, [the doctors] told me to feel better I will need surgery so I decided to do it,” said Federer.
“I’ll be on crutches for many weeks and then also out of the game for many months.
“So it’s going to be difficult in some ways but at the same time I know it’s the right thing to do because I want to be healthy.”
The player who recently turned 40 has no intentions to retire, however, and is keen to get back playing, but recognises he must first be able to do so without pain.
“I want to give myself a glimmer of hope also to return to the tour in some shape or form,” continued Federer.
“I am realistic, don’t get me wrong, I know how difficult it is at this age to do another surgery and try it but I want to be healthy.”
Federer thanked his fans for their messages of support and promised to provide further updates soon.
Roger Federer se despidió agradeciendo el apoyo de sus fans. Quiere darse “esperanza para para regresar al circuito de alguna forma”, finalizó.
