Novak Djokovic won his 15th Grandslam title after a comprehensive victory over Rafael Nadal at the Rod Laver Arena in the finals of the 2019 Australian Open.

Djokovic won imperiously in straight sets, *6-3 6-2 6-3*. This is his 7th title in Melbourne – a record, going past Roger Federer and Roy Emerson.

There are times when finals don’t quite live up to the expectations. Happened in 1999 when Andre Agassi was played out of the lawn by Pete Sampras in Wimbledon. 2008 French Open final saw Rafa Nadal ease past Roger Federer in straight sets.

Today he was at the wrong end of one such final as Djokovic produced a masterclass and simply blew his Spanish opponent away. Fans expecting another epic between the two titans were still treated to a stunning tennis match, albeit one-sided.

The marker was set right at the start as the Serbian took the first set in less than 30 minutes. Nadal managed to win just 1 out of the 21 receiving points as he conceded the first set, 6-3.

Djokovic was relentless and didn’t allow Rafa to find his feet. He served with precision and broke the Spaniard’s serve twice in the 2nd set to win it 6-2. At that point, he had made 4 unforced errors to Rafa’s 18. The pressure was telling on the 17-time Grandslam winner and for once, a comeback looked unlikely.

Djokovic went from strength to strength and was so assured that he was magnanimous enough to applaud a rare moment of brilliance from his beleaguered opponent during one of the points.

The script was the same for the 3rd set as the World No.1 broke his opponent’s serve early and with that his spirit. He consolidated on that break with his precise service game to see out the match.
