The 2018 World Cup qualifiers resulted in several major national teams failing to make it to Russia, including the United States, who have proposed an alternative tournament for their fellow teams who did not qualify.
After Sweden stunned the Italians in the play-offs, Gianluigi Buffon and Co. will miss out on the tournament but there could be a consolation competition in the making.
According to Sports Illustrated, the US and Soccer United Marketing are studying the idea of creating an alternate World Cup, which would take place in the summer of next year.
Although these are only early rumours, the tournament would house the champions of each confederation; the United States (Concacaf), Cameroon (Africa), Chile (Conmebol), as well as world football powerhouses such as Italy and Holland.
Ghana are also expected to be invited to join in, as next summer will be their first time missing out on the World Cup since 2002.
