Edo State has reported eight new cases, one more death and 18 recoveries from coronavirus (COVID-19), as the government intensifies measures to ensure compliance with preventive protocols to guard against the spread of the second wave of the pandemic.

The State COVID-19 Incident Manager, Dr. Andrew Obi, disclosed this during the daily virtual meeting of the State COVID-19 Taskforce, chaired by the state governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki.

Obi noted that the new death figure brings to 73, the total number of deaths recorded since December 01, 2020 when the state started tracking the second wave of the virus.

According to him, “Edo State, in the last 24 hours, recorded eight more cases, one new death and 18 recoveries from COVID-19. The new death was reported from the Stella Obasanjo Hospital.”

He disclosed that the eight new cases were confirmed from the 187 samples collected within the 24-hour period, adding that there are currently 210 active cases that are being managed at various treatment and isolation centres in the state.

The Incident Manager explained, “Edo has, so far, in the second wave, collected 19,967 samples, recorded 2,066 confirmed cases, 1,783 recoveries and 73 deaths.”

While urging residents to support the government in its efforts at containing the second wave of the pandemic and protecting the people, Obi charged residents with any COVID-19 symptoms to contact the Edo Emergency Operation Centre on this toll-free number: 08003625000 for assistance.

He added: “Wear your facemask when in public, wash your hands regularly under running water, use alcohol-based hand sanitizers and observe social distancing.”
