It was a memorable evening at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu as Real Madrid overcame a resilient Bayern Munich side to reach their seventh successive Champions League semi-final, a feat never previously achieved.

Never before in either the Champions League guise or the European Cup has a single team reached the final four in so many consecutive seasons and it is yet another impressive feat for Zinedine Zidane’s spell in charge.

The previous record was six successive appearances which was jointly held by Barcelona and Los Blancos.

Since the 2010/11 season, Real Madrid have been an ever present in the latter stages of Europe’s elite competition and have managed to lift the trophy twice in that time.

Bayern Munich’s own performances of late have been impressive and had they progressed on Tuesday they would have tied the record by reaching six successive semi-finals of their own.

It is no secret that the Spanish giants are out on their own in European competition; they have lifted the trophy more than anybody else with the 11 triumphs and have now been in the semi-final a record 28 times.

Their next nearest challenger to that record is Bayern Munich who have been semi-finalists on 18 different occasions.
