Rafael Nadal has crashed out of the Australian Open after retiring hurt in the fifth set of his quarterfinal against Marin Cilic.
He had won the first and third sets but lost the second and fourth and was trailing in the fifth (6-3, 3-6, 7-6, 2-6, 0-2) before deciding he could not continue.
He had called for the trainer during the fourth set. He was given some tablets that appeared to be pain medication and the trainer spent three minutes working on his right quad muscle.
Though it seemed he had shaken it off, Nadal started limping in the fifth set and felt he could not go on.
Marin Cilic will now play Kyle Edmund in the semifinal.
