Novak Djokovic came through a five-set marathon with Taylor Fritz winning 7-6, 6-4, 4-6, 4-6, 6-2 to reach the third round of the Australian Open on Friday.

After claiming the first two sets, the world No.1 began to feel discomfort in his abdominal muscles and received treatment on court.

His physical suffering was evident in his play, as American Fritz fought his way back into the context to force a fifth set.

At midnight, the fans in attendance at Melbourne Park were asked to leave the grounds and return to their homes. The state of Victoria was entering lockdown at 00:00 to curb coronavirus infections.

With nobody left in the stands, Djokovic took advantage of this break to turn the match back into his favour, emerging comfortably to take the final set.

Due to Victoria’s snap lockdown, no supporters will be allowed to attend the Australian Open until next Thursday at the earliest.
