Leicester City earned a 2-1 win at Newcastle United on Sunday which helps them maintain the pressure on Liverpool and Manchester United who are the only two sides in the Premier League currently above them.

It was an even clash in the first period, with few sides able to make any significant strides in the other’s penalty area.

However, the Foxes took control of the game at the start of the second half and, despite a late comeback attempt, held on for three points to push them up to third place.

The opener came after a sweeping team move, with Jamie Vardy providing the assist for James Maddison who lashed the ball home from the edge of the box on 55 minutes.

The visitors doubled their lead through Yuri Tielemans’ similarly sweet strike, with the square pass coming from Marc Albrighton.

Andy Carroll’s volley halved the deficit with nine minutes remaining, and Newcastle began to ask serious questions of Leicester’s resolve.

Nevertheless, Brendan Rodgers’ men held on for another vital three points.
