Cordoba Send Getafe Out Of Copa del Rey

Gone are the dizzying heights of Getafe dreaming of Champions League qualification, and the club’s difficult 2020/21 campaign took an even worse turn on Tuesday as they were dumped out of the Copa del Rey by a 1-0 defeat to Cordoba.

Willy Ledesma scored the decisive goal in just the sixth minute of play to hand the lower league club the lead, yet it was a match which further highlighted the identity crisis engulfing Getafe at his moment.

Jose Bordalas had managed to build such an efficient team in the past two seasons, where every player knew their role, but that has fallen apart this term.

The Madrid club currently sit in 16th place in the top flight, and there are question marks over whether Bordalas’ style has become stale.

The imminent loan signing of Carles Alena might allow for a slight change in approach, with the midfielder an excellent technician, but that doesn’t do anything for fans hoping for a lengthy run in the domestic cup.

Getafe have lost their identity, they are no longer aggressive off the ball, they don’t win it back as much, the winning spirit has gone and the signings made in 2020 have all been a disaster.

Angel and Mata were the goalscoring duo who were the envy of much of Spanish football, but the goals have dried up and the team’s results are suffering because of that.

Cordoba took their chance and played with desire and energy, the players all knew their own task and it was reflected in the performance.

This was a clash of two teams going in opposite directions, and the result can hardly be a surprise in that instance.
