The Movement For A Sustainable Lagos State University Students’ Union (LASUSU), has urged the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) of the institution to cancelled the just concluded elections.

The group in a statement signed by its Director General, Quadri Hisa Olabode and Media Director, Ajayi Peter, made available to worldtopnewsng.com also accused IEC of manipulating the elections.

The group insisted that declaring Oladele Oluwatayo Olawale (Ola Delz) as winner of the poll is a rape on democracy.

“A man dies when he refuses to stand up for that which is right. A man dies when he refuses to stand up for justice. A man dies when he refuses to take a stand for that which is true.” — Dr Martin Luther King Jr

We at the Movement for a Sustainable LASUSU appreciates the love and support of all our supporters, friends, colleagues and Lasuites generally. It is with your continuous support that we have come this far. We promised never to let you down.

With regards to the LASUSU elections that took place on February 27th, 2019, it is clear that there were manifest and unresolved issues that marred the election which negate the declaration of winners by IEC.

One obvious issue is the inconsistent of the IEC. Our understanding of an election is that election is a process. We find it difficult to believe that a winner can be declared from an incomplete process after 14 days of stalemate. The IEC argument that there is no provision for supplementary elections in the LASUSU constitution is flimsy and unfounded. There is nothing like supplementary election in this present situation, what we have is an election that is still in process (incomplete election) as such requires completion before a winner can emerge. That is the practice all over the world and our case here should not be different.

Another glaring anomalies is the obvious admission of error by the IEC in their purported declaration statement. The LASUSU constitution Section 70 sub section 3 (j) provides that IEC shall be held liable for any act of omission or commission that may arise in the execution of their duties.

The unnecessary interference by people other than students in the election process raises more doubt about the LASU we desire. In fact, it is a disservice to our union electoral process and the union as a whole. It portray the principalities as more of a dictatorial than we expected. This act is condemnable and should not be associated with a world class institution like ours.

We at Movement for Sustainable LASUSU  abides with democratic ethos and shall seek to exhaust all the democrat avenues in challenging the injustice metted on our union by the IEC. If the election had been free, fair and credible, our movement will have embraced the winner announced and extend our hands of fellowship.

Consequently, we reject the declaration of winners of incomplete election  process by the IEC. We want to assure all of our supporters that we will not allow this injustice go unchallenged.

We believe in the impartiality of the judicial system as it has been tested over time. Also, we hope and pray Lasuites will someday summon the courage to defend the independence of their union and it’s democratic values.

Aluta Continua Victoria Ascerta,
Dare to struggle, Dare to win.
