1 Died, Scores Injured As Dr Bello Goes On Shooting Rampage At NY Hospital
At least one person has reportedly been killed and several others wounded – including three doctors after shots were fired by another doctor at a hospital in New York.
A law enforcement official told the AP news agency that the gunman, Henry Bello, used to work at the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center.
The official said Dr Bello walked into the hospital at about 2.50pm with a rifle concealed in a lab coat.
New York State Assemblyman Michael Blake told local television station NY1 that Dr Bello was armed with what appeared to be an M16 assault rifle.
He is said to have killed at least one person and injured six others before apparently killing himself.
Citing a fire department official, the New York Times said at least one wounded doctor was treated using an emergency fire hose fashioned as a tourniquet.
Those wounded were said to be on the 16th and 17th floors.
According to an ambulance worker speaking to local media, one bleeding patient was carried down nine flights of stairs to safety, two emergency responders applying pressure to the man’s wound on the way down.
NYPD spokesman, J Peter Donald, said on Twitter: “One shooter is deceased at the hospital.”
Mr Donald had earlier posted: “NYPD is on scene at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital where there are reports of several people shot.”
Police cars and firetrucks rushed to the scene, officers going through the building floor by floor.
At one stage, officers could be seen on the roof of the building, guns drawn.
The 120-year-old hospital’s emergency room is among the busiest in the city.
Police are advising people to avoid the area.
