At least 23 people have died and dozens more wounded after an elevated metro line in Mexico City collapsed as a train was passing.

Forty-nine people have also been rushed to hospital following the incident, which saw the train snap in two onto the road underneath, leaving a car crushed in the rubble.

Passengers were trapped inside the train, and city mayor Claudia Sheinbaum stated earlier in the day that 15 people had died thus far.

“So far we have 15 people who unfortunately lost their lives,” she said.

BBC have reported that as many as 23 had died thus far.

“We only heard a loud thunder, and everything fell apart,” Mariana, a 26-year-old passenger, told El Universal.

“There were many people standing and sitting in the carriage, and when the carriage fell, we went flying and hit our heads on its roof.”

Mexico City’s civil defence department later reported on Twitter that as many as 70 people had been injured in the tragic accident.
