I humbly offer to serve as the General Secretary, NGE.

 

QASIM Olalere AKINRETI’s BIONOTE

Qasim Olalere Akinreti, Ph.D, is a Multimedia Journalist, Trainer, Part-time Consultant, Author and Deputy Director, Digital Media Voice of Nigeria, VON.

 

Training Experience

I have had a unique opportunity to serve as an Adjunct faculty, Nigerian Institute of Journalism, NIJ, Lagos, Nigeria, to train a new generation of Journalists. Dr Mrs Elizabeth, former Provost of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, NIJ, sought my expertise, and it was approved by the then Executive Director of News Voice of Nigeria, respected and cerebral Sir Okey Nwachukwu.

The NGE allowed me to serve as a Discussant at the ANEC in Abuja and I participated actively in all programmes.

 

Editorial Experience

As a seasoned international journalist with experience as a Reporter/Researcher, News Producer, Editor and Public Affairs Analyst for over three decades, I have covered regional and international assignments such as the ECOWAS Summits, EU-Africa Summit, UNCTAD Conference, and Highway Africa Conferences among others for Voice of Nigeria. I was among the international journalists selected by Oxfam to visit Democracy Radio in Senegal and cover the first EU-Africa Conference in Portugal.

 

Education

I obtained a B.Ed Degree in Special Education from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, in 1991, a Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism at the prestigious Nigerian Institute of Journalism, NIJ, in 1993, and two Master’s degrees (MA Online Journalism and MPhil in Mass Communication from the

Nottingham Trent University, United Kingdom, in 2003 and Babcock University in

2014. I bagged a Ph.D in Mass Communication from Babcock University, Ilishan Remo, Ogun State, in 2017.

 

Fellowships

My expertise in Broadcast Journalism and Multimedia earned me the Davis Foster African Journalists Award and a fellowship to the Poynter Institute of Media Studies, St Petersburg, Florida, US in 2006. Other fellows of the Poynter Institute are Rose Moses and Lekan Otufodunrin.

 

Publications

As a Media scholar, I have over fifteen (15 ) publications in local and international journals. Published two books – “The Secrets of Online Journalism,” 2011, reviewed in 2022 and “Footprints in Broadcasting,” 2024.

 

 Media Unionism

I was a former Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, 2017-2020. In addition to being a Member of The Nigerian Guild of Editors, NGE, I also belong to the International Press Institute, IPI, and Commonwealth Journalists Association, CBA.

 

Research Experience

Currently, I am the Co-Lead African Hub of a Media Research Group on Journalism Education and Trauma Research (JETREG), a global research body based in Sheffield and Lincoln University, United Kingdom. I am also a member of the Association of Communication

Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN).
