10 Men Southampton Hold Tottenham To A draw
Tottenham Hotspur couldn’t overcome the 10 men of Southampton, despite having a man advantage for 50 minutes of their 1-1 draw at Saint Mary’s on Tuesday afternoon. After James Ward-Prowse fired the home side in front, Mohammed Salisu was sent off as he conceded the penalty from which Harry Kane scored the equalising goal. Yet, Spurs couldn’t find another goal in the second 45 minutes.
After Ben Davies had a potential opener ruled out for offside, Southampton took the lead in the 25th minute when Tottenham failed to deal with a long throw-in, with Ward-Prowse brilliantly firing past Hugo Lloris.
The home side were dealt a huge blow 15 minutes later, though, when Salisu collected a second yellow for fouling Son Heung-min inside the area. Kane stepped up and confidently dispatched his effort to make it 1-1 at the break.
At the start of the second half, Kane appeared to have put the visitors ahead by scoring his second goal of the afternoon, but VAR showed that he was ever so slightly offside and it remained 1-1.
Spurs then suffered the pain of a third disallowed goal, as a foul was given against Matt Doherty for colliding with Fraser Forster before the ball ricocheted into the net.
Despite these setbacks, Spurs kept going and Bryan Gil impressed off the bench, while fellow substitute Lucas Moura tested Forster twice late on. But, Spurs couldn’t find a winning goal that would stand, meaning they head back to London with just one point.
