Wayne Rooney says he wants to extend his 13-year Manchester United career beyond this summer.
Rooney has started just 22 games in all competitions for United this season, and his agent flew to China earlier this year to hold talks with interested Super League clubs.
England’s all-time leading scorer later released a statement saying he was staying at Old Trafford but made no mention of his long-term plans.
Speaking at the press conference before Thursday’s Europa League semi-final against Celta Vigo Rooney admitted his frustration at not starting more under Jose Mourinho.
But asked about his United future he said: “I’ve been at this club 13 years, of course I want to play football.”
And when asked ‘here?’ he replied: “Of course.”
The season-ending injury suffered by Zlatan Ibrahimovic last month has meant more Premier League playing time for Rooney, who scored against Burnley and Swansea last month and started Sunday’s defeat at Arsenal.
But the 31-year-old was an unused substitute in Spain last week as United beat Celta Vigo 1-0 in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final.
He said: “I haven’t thrown my toys out of the pram but I do want to play to help the team.
“Football changes. You have different challenges in your career. I would like to play more but I’ve tried to help the team on and off pitch.
“Of course you want to play every game. I’ve had to try to take my chance when called upon. I try to do my best for the team.”
Rooney also said his “sole focus” was on on helping United reach the Europa League final in Stockholm, where a place in next season’s Champions League will also be up for grabs.
“It’s important for us to be back in the Champions League,” he said. “This club belongs there. Realistically it’s going to be difficult to do it through the league.
“This is a European semi-final. It’s the biggest competition we’ve had a realistic chance of winning in the last two or three years.”
