After a sluggish start, Rafael Nadal recovered brilliantly to defeat Taro Daniels and book his spot in the US Open round 3 while Roger Federer had to survive yet another five-setter against Mikhail Youzhny of Russia in order to safely negotiate round two.
There were no major upsets on day 4 of the final grand slam of the year as Juan Martin del Potro, Dominic Thiem, David Goffin and Gael Monfils also won their respective round two games.
In the women’s section, top seed Karolina Pliskova surged past USA’s Nicole Gibbs while 4th seed Elina Svitolina defeated Russia’s Evgeniya Rodina. American Madison Keys, Jelena Ostapenko and Agnieszka Radwanska all made it to the third round.
