Trump Admits He Wrongly Said Unemployment Among African Americans Reached Its Lowest Levels
President Trump late Tuesday admitted to wrongly claiming a few weeks ago that unemployment for African Americans was at its lowest rate ever.
“I have to tell you, the fake news about two weeks ago got me on that one. Because, two months ago, it was the lowest level ever recorded,” Trump said during a speech.
“Then, about four weeks ago, it went slightly not as good. And I made a speech; I said, ‘African American unemployment has reached the lowest levels ever recorded.’ And it really wasn’t. It was good, but it wasn’t. And they got me. They said it wasn’t so.”
Trump continued, saying unemployment for African Americans “went back down to the lowest levels ever recorded” last week.
“So we have it, right? It makes us feel good. That’s an important one,” he said.
Trump took to Twitter last month to tout low unemployment among black workers, praising the numbers as the lowest in history despite a jump in black unemployment in January.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, black unemployment rose to 7.7 percent in January after previously falling to 6.8 percent in December, which was the lowest reported since the records first began in 1972.
