British Businessman Bets £4 Million On Donald Trump To Win US Election
A mystery British businessman has reportedly bet £4 million ($5 million) on Donald Trump winning the US election.
The anonymous ex-banker, based offshore, is said to have taken 37/20 odds on what is believed to be the largest ever political wager at a private bookies on the Caribbean island of Curacao.
It would win almost $15 million (£11.5 million) if rival Joe Biden is defeated.
A source from the betting industry told the Sun: ‘Word of this bet has done the rounds and we think it’s the biggest ever made on politics.’
Many people have rushed to place last-minute bets on today’s US election, with gambling firm GVC saying the bets are ‘twice as big as 2016, easily making it the biggest political event ever.’
People look overseas to place political bets because it is illegal in the United States.
Irish bookmaker Paddy Power said 93% of wagers placed on the election in the last 24 hours have backed Trump but some big bets have been placed on Biden too.
British gambling company Ladbrokes said three in four bets on the election have predicted a Trump win. A spokeswoman told the Sun: ‘Biden looks home and hosed according to the bookies and pollsters, but even at the eleventh-hour punters are continuing to back Trump at the odds on offer.’
