Sheffield United finally recorded their first Premier League victory of the season at the 18th time of asking, with a 1-0 win over ten-man Newcastle United.
It looked to be another tough evening for the Blades heading into the half-time break, but that dramatically changed when Newcastle’s Ryan Fraser picked up two yellow cards in quick succession to give them a man advantage for the whole of the second period.
That buoyed Chris Wilder’s men, who showed real intent in clinching all three points.
And on 73 minutes, that persistence was rewarded when they were given a penalty for handball, which veteran Billy Sharp converted.
Wilder’s side held on until the end for a vital and morale boosting victory.
