After a devastating breakdown in relations between Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini and Papu Gomez, the exciting Argentine forward has officially signed a contract with Sevilla.

It became clear shortly before the final Champions League group game that something would have to give with regards to the rift within the Bergamo club’s dressing room, and whilst many thought Gasperini would go, it has proven, in fact, to be Gomez.

Monchi and Sevilla have been working on this deal for much of the window and have beaten a host of Italian clubs to his signature, most notably Juventus, who were linked earlier in the month.

The deal could be worth up to seven million euros, whilst the player has penned a contract that will tie him to the Andalusian club until June of 2024.

Gomez, though, turns 33 on February 15, and is unlikely to be able to perform at the peak of his powers for the entirety of that agreement.

In 252 matches with Atalanta he scored 59 goals and contributed 71 assists, playing a key role as Gasperini’s charges became one of the most exciting teams in Europe.

Tuesday evening will see the Argentine work under Julen Lopetegui in training for the first time, and he actually gives the coach an alternative option in attack, especially after Carlos Fernandez left for Real Sociedad.

Ever Banega’s departure after winning the Europa League last season is still impacting Sevilla, they haven’t yet found that player to link the midfield and attack, but they hope Gomez is the ideal candidate.
