Schools Shut As Gunmen Kill Six In Rivers Community

The gale of insecurity has swept through Rivers State on Tuesday as six persons were killed and scores wounded when gunmen invaded Uegwere community in the Khana Local Government  Area of the state.

Some eyewitnesses said  assailants had made their way into the sleepy community and opened fire on a group of youths going about their lawful duties.

A former Chairman of the Community Development Committee, Gospower Ipianeh, while narrating the incident to one of our correspondents said the gunmen who came  in a commando style. went to a section of the community called Kako and executed their deadly mission.

Ilaineh said,”I was in church when we heard sporadic shootings in the community. People were running helter-shelter and when we found out, it was activities of unknown gunmen who invaded a section of the community called Kako.

“They met some  youths who were there in their numbers, shot sporadically and killed six and wounded others.”

The Chairman of the Governing Council of Uegwere community, Chief Raphael Kponee appealed to the government to come to their aid, saying learning had been disrupted, while students had fled.

“We really want the government to come to our aid because if things continue this way, we will end up losing all members of our community.

“Already some people have deserted the community. The few living there now are in fear because of what they witnessed. Schools did not open because of this incident,” he added.

When contacted, the spokesman of the State  Police Command, Nnamdi Omoni said he would call the police division and get back to our correspondent, but he had yet to give our correspondent feedback at the time of fling this report.
