Roma and Inter drew 2-2 on Sunday at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday in a battle between third and second in the table which will have left first-place AC Milan happier than anyone.

Milan, who beat Torino on Saturday, now have a three point lead over Inter at the top, having both played 17 gamees.

Roma’s line-up included two Spaniards, Gonzalo Villar in midfield and Pau Lopez, who made some impressive stops in goal.

It was the home side who opened the scoring in the 17th minute through Lorenzo Pelligrini, whose deflected shot from outside the box left Samir Handanovic rooted to the spot.

It remained 1-0 at the break, but the visitors took the lead with a seven-minute double salvo beginning in the 56th minute with a Milan Skriniar header.

Former Real Madrid wing back Achraf Hakimi then put Inter ahead with a stunning left footed curler that when in off the underside of the bar.

Antonio Conte’s men seemed to be heading for the three points until the 86th minute when Gianluca Mancini popped up to steer home a Villar cross with his head.

The points shared, then, but it will be Milan coach Stefano Pioli who will be more content than either Conte of Roma boss Paulo Fonseca, especially as the next round of fixtures could give them a chance to extend their lead.

Milan face a trip to Cagliari in their next Serie A encounter, while Roma have a derby with Lazio and Inter host reigning champions Juventus.
