The Man Behind Liverpool’s Anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, Dies Aged 78

Gerry Marsden, the lead singer of the band who performed the song ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ has died aged 78.

Marsden led the band Gerry and the Pacemakers, whose cover of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s song ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ was first sung at Liverpool’s games in 1963.

The song has gone on to become a renowned part of club culture, recognised all over the world for its playing at the start of Liverpool matches at Anfield.

Now, the Premier League club have paid tribute to Marsden, who supported Liverpool, after his death on Sunday.

“Liverpool Football Club is deeply saddened by the passing of Gerry Marsden,” the club said in a statement.

“Sung in times of both celebration and commiseration, Gerry’s interpretation of You’ll Never Walk Alone will forever be inextricably linked to the club he loved.”
