The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Mrs.) Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, has pledged to work harmoniously with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and other arms of government to ensure the seamless delivery of the dividends of democracy to Lagosians, with a core focus on transparency, inclusion, and good governance.
In her remarks during her inaugural plenary session on Friday, January 17, 2025, the newly-elected Speaker made a profound commitment to collaborative governance with the state government. Her address marked the beginning of a new chapter for the Lagos State House of Assembly, setting the tone for a harmonious and effective administration dedicated to the people of Lagos.
Addressing distinguished members of the Assembly, guests, staff, and Lagosians, she expressed her gratitude for the trust placed in her and outlined her vision for a unified and effective government.
Acknowledging the sacred responsibility bestowed upon the Assembly, the Speaker emphasized the need to work collectively for the betterment of Lagos State. “We are the guardians of the collective trust of Lagosians. Our administration will focus on working together for a better Lagos, ensuring every resident—irrespective of gender, education, religion, or ethnicity—is proud to say, ‘I am a Lagosian,’” she said confidently.
Rt. Hon. Meranda stressed the importance of synergy between the legislative and executive arms of government and underscored the necessity of open communication and mutual respect to align legislative actions with the state’s developmental vision, ably led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
“Our legislative actions must align with the executive’s vision for a better Lagos. By fostering a spirit of cooperation and mutual respect, we can leave the stage far better than we met it,” she affirmed.
The Speaker also called for a renewed focus on progress rather than past controversies, urging all members to prioritize service delivery to Lagosians. She outlined key priorities, including strengthening legislative independence, promoting transparency and accountability in governance, and creating an inclusive democracy where every citizen feels valued and empowered.
“Our oneness is our strength. As leaders, we must lead by example, demonstrating integrity and fairness in all our dealings. We will strive to amplify the voices of our constituents, address their concerns, and protect their welfare,” she said.
Rt. Hon. Meranda called for unity and collective action, pledging to listen to ideas, respond to concerns, and work collaboratively with all stakeholders to overcome challenges.
“Together, let us work towards a brighter future for Lagos State—a future built on justice, equality, and opportunity for all. This, we will achieve together,” she averred.
