Luka Modric made history in Croatia’s narrow 1-0 win over Cyprus in Group H of European qualifying for the 2022 World Cup .

The Real Madrid midfielder overtook Darijo Srna in appearances for Croatia, earning his 135th cap for the 2018 World Cup finalists.

It looked like a simple game on paper for Croatia, but they were pushed to the limit by a valiant Cyprus side under new coach Nikos Kostenoglou.

The decisive goal came five minutes before the break through Mario Pasalic who capitalised on a defensive mix-up.

In the second half, it was the visitors who threatened more but Croatia held on for a win that partly makes up for the defeat against Slovenia.

Modric played the full 90 minutes for his country, while Sime Vrsaljko of Atletico and Ante Budimir of Mallorca also featured.
