Miranchuk Nets Winner As Russia Grab First Euro 2020 Victory
An Aleksei Miranchuk goal in the first half stoppage time was enough for Russia to clinch a well-earned 1-0 victory over Finland in their second game of the 2020 European Championship group stage.
Joel Pohjanpalo opened the scoring for Finland with a brilliant diving header just four minutes in, but his goal was ruled out for offside after VAR review.
Magomed Ozdoyev sent the ball wide in Russia’s first chance of the match six minutes later, but Miranchuk broke the deadlock just before the break after an Artem Dzyuba’s cut-back.
Finland dominated the ball and pushed for an equaliser after the interval, but Teemu Pukki wasted a couple of opportunities to level the game.
Daler Kuzyayev and Alexander Sobolev each squandered a chance to put the game to bed, but Finland weren’t able punish Russia, who grabbed all three points.
Finland, Russia and Belgium have all taken three points each, while Denmark, who have one game in hand against the Belgians, have not managed a single point in Group B.
