Messi Scores His 50th Freekick For Barcelona

Lionel Messi scored the 50th freekick of his Barcelona career during their 3-2 win over Valencia on Sunday night.

The Argentine bent his effort just out of Jasper Cillessen’s reach, with the ball finding its way into the back of the net via the upright.

That was Messi’s third goal from a freekick this season – after strikes against Granada and Athletic Club – and, as mentioned, his 50th in all competitions for the Blaugrana.

The most freekicks the 32-year-old has scored in one season was in 2018/19, when he netted eight times from a dead ball. He did so seven times each in 2015/16 and 2017/18.

His first freekick goal arrived in the 2008/09 campaign, while he also netted five of them last season.

Another brace for Messi

Sunday’s visit to Mestalla also saw Messi score his ninth double of the season in LaLiga Santander.

Real Betis, Athletic, Granada, Alaves, Elche, Huesca, Real Sociedad and Getafe have all conceded twice to Messi in at least one match this season.

That means the forward is now on 28 goals for the season in LaLiga Santander, where he leads Karim Benzema in the scoring charts by seven.
