Arampant ten minute period during the first half of their Champions League last-16 tie with Basel almost certainly secured Manchester City’s passage to the next round as Pep Guardiola’s men won 4-0 in Switzerland.
Even though the Premier League leaders had just two more shots than their hosts on Tuesday night, they had effectively won the tie by the 23rd minute.
Opening the scoring before the quarter-hour mark was a well-timed header by Ilkay Gundogan before Bernardo Silva added a looping volley.
Sergio Aguero found the corner with a bouncing effort from range to round off a raucous opening spell from City, who had Gundogan finalise the scoreline via a neat curling effort on 53 minutes.
The news got even better for the Sky Blues, too, thanks to Leroy Sane’s return off the bench just two weeks after being ruled out for approximately six weeks with an ankle injury.
