Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow, who produced a brilliant display between the goalposts, denied both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Roberto Firmino once, as well as Mohamed Salah twice, as the home side headed into half time level.
Sadio Mane’s effort after the break went just wide and Salah wasted another big chance to open the scoring after the hour mark.
Liverpool piled the pressure on Newcastle and, after Firmino failed to hit the target from close range, Ciaran Clark forced Alisson Becker into a big save.
Mane and Firmino missed one chance each in the remaining minutes, so Liverpool dropped two points at the St James’ Park three days after drawing with West Brom on home soil.
