Liverpool Beat Chelsea On Penalties To Win Carabao Cup Final

A goalless draw in which Liverpool FC and Chelsea FC both had big chances to win, Blues goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga – who came on as a substitute for Edouard Mendy for the shootout – missed the decisive spot-kick, with the Reds triumphing 11-10 on penalties.

Both Liverpool FC and Chelsea FC had goals ruled out for offside in a pulsating encounter at Wembley, but it was the Reds who ended up triumphing in the ahootout.

Build up to the final:

The first major silverware of the English club season is up for grabs this afternoon as Chelsea take on Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

The Blues have already lifted one trophy this month, claiming their first Club World Cup title with victory over Palmeiras in Abu Dhabi and are now looking to win this competition for the sixth time.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have been in magnificent form in the Premier League, reigniting their pursuit of Manchester City in the title race, but are seeking what would – remarkably – be a first domestic cup success under Jurgen Klopp.

The build-up to the game has been overshadowed by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with Thomas Tuchel admitting earlier this week that criticism of Chelsea’s Russian ownership had left the club surrounded by “uncertainty”.

On Saturday evening, less than 24 hours before the final, Roman Abramovich announced he was handing stewardship of the club to the Chelsea Foundation’s board of trustees, though he remains owner and has no intention of selling up.
