After the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) announced that chairmanship and councillorship elections will take place on July 12 across the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas in the state, the political atmosphere of the Agege Local government council area is gaining momentum.

As the election approaches, numerous aspirants from different political factions are actively campaigning both on the streets and online for their respective party nominations.

Notably, there is significant attention on the son of the Lagos State Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa who is seeking the All Progressives Congress nomination for the Agege Council chairmanship.

During a press conference held in Agege yesterday, stakeholders including community and political leaders, urged the Obasa, to support his son’s candidacy for the position.

“It’s our heartfelt wish that Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa rescinds his opposition to our collective aspiration of making Ganiyu Vinod Obasa our next council’s chairman.

“Our agitation stems from the indisputable fact that Vinod has the capacity to take Agege to a new height given his outstanding involvement in community service, experience, exposure and academic achievements.

“This is someone who has first and second degrees in universities in the UK in Accounting and Finance and is currently a PhD student at Babcock University.

“He is equally not lacking in experience having worked for Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC). He later joined Providus Bank before moving to Parallex Bank where he left as the Head of Performance Management and Strategy to start his own business, a going concern in the business of real estate and farming,” the spokesman for the stakeholders at the event, incumbent Executive Chairman of Agege Local Government, Alhaji Ganiyu Kola Egunjobi said.

Egunjobi spoke on behalf of the stakeholders, which included Hon. Jubreel Abdulkareem, the lawmaker representing Agege II, Alhaji Tunde Disco, the Agege APC Party Chairman, and Chief Safari Aderanijo. They emphasized the positive impact of Obasa Jnr’s football academy, VINOD FA, which operates under the umbrella of Kings Sports, on the community.

“To my knowledge over four footballers from his academy in Agege here are currently in Europe on the verge of signing professional contracts abroad. So we have another Kunle Soname of Ikosi-Isheri Local Council on our hands,” the council chair added.

The stakeholders expressed that the youth of the Speaker’s son aligns well with the current dynamics of the council administration. They emphasized that their appeal for the Speaker to endorse his son for the council’s chairmanship stems from a desire to recognize his dedication to the growth and development of Agege.

“How old was I when I became the Council Chairman 8 years ago? Same with the Vice chairman during my first term in office, he was much younger than me. Even the current Vice Chairman is way younger than me.

“We consider our earnest desire to have Abdulganiyu as our Council Chairman as a way of rewarding the numerous humanitarian endeavours of the Speaker in Agege land and beyond.

“Obasa has removed several families from poverty in terms of helping them to get jobs in the civil service and political appointments; and for most of us, this is a payback time,” Egunjobi affirmed.
