As preparations for the 2025 World Tourism Day celebration ramp up, the Lagos State Government declares its unwavering commitment to transforming the State’s beaches into prime hubs for sustainable tourism and investment.

On Monday, September 22, 2025, the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyin, led a strong delegation of stakeholders on a pre-event inspection of Tarkwa Bay Beach, the designated venue for this year’s celebration set for Saturday, September 27.

During the visit, Mrs. Benson-Awoyinka emphasized that Lagos boasts an impressive 183 kilometers of beachfront along the Atlantic Ocean, extending to the Badagry creeks—untapped treasures that have the potential to rival global tourist hotspots.

“This year, the Ministry is spotlighting Lagos beaches. With the right infrastructure and sustainable investments, our beaches can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with international resorts like Cancun and the Maldives. We are determined to transform them into world-class destinations that not only attract tourists but also empower our people,” she said.

The Commissioner outlined the State Government’s decisive plans to upgrade infrastructure, enhance security, and expand ferry transportation to ensure easy access to Tarkwa Bay.

Furthermore, she declared robust capacity-building programs designed to empower local youths as lifeguards, tour guides, and coastal guards. This initiative is not just about safety; it’s a powerful strategy to create employment opportunities for residents.

Mrs. Benson-Awoyinka also stressed the critical need for collaboration with local residents, asserting that their active participation in environmental management, hospitality, and cultural promotion is essential for establishing Tarkwa Bay as a leading tourist destination.

In support of this initiative, Mrs. Bolaji Mustapha, President of the Nigerian Association of Tour Operators (NATOP), commended the Lagos State Government for its proactive approach, calling the government’s focus on upgrading Tarkwa Bay a strategic move to position the beach as a top choice for both domestic and international visitors.

She underscored the importance of infrastructure improvements, transportation enhancements, and youth training as vital components for the initiative’s success.

Mr. Tolulope Bradley, the Beach Master of Tarkwa Bay, expressed heartfelt appreciation to the State Government, noting that the community has long awaited such impactful interventions.

He assured that residents are fully committed to supporting government initiatives, particularly in environmental management, seafood services, and improved safety measures.

The inspection visit also included critical discussions on enhancing the beach’s environmental conditions, electricity supply, the availability of local cuisines for tourists, and specialized training for security personnel to ensure effective visitor management.
