The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening heritage preservation and advancing tourism development through a strategic two-day working tour to the Republic of Benin.

Led by the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, the delegation included the Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Hon. Solomon Bonu; Special Adviser to the Governor on Works, Engr. Adekunle Olayinka; Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Bopo Oyekan-Ismaila; alongside ministry officials and the Managing Director/CEO of Sageto Nigeria Limited, Engr. Salim Abou Jaoude.

The tour, which took place from March 17 to 18, 2026, covered Badagry in Lagos and extended to Cotonou and Ouidah in the Republic of Benin. It focused on exploring opportunities to enhance heritage tourism, particularly in Badagry, known for its historical significance in the transatlantic slave trade.
During the visit, the delegation explored key historical landmarks in Ouidah, including the Point of No Return, the Slave Market, and the Amazon Statue. The experience provided valuable insights into global best practices in heritage preservation and immersive cultural tourism.

The initiative underscores Lagos State’s resolve to preserve shared history, promote cultural diplomacy, and position its tourism sector to meet global standards.
