Expert Says Americans Are Willing To Give Trump ‘Running Room’ On Trade

Public opinion analyst Karlyn Bowman on Wednesday said that Americans are willing to give President Trump a chance when it comes to negotiating trade deals.

“They’re willing to give Trump some running room on these deals,” Bowman, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, told Hill.TV’s Joe Concha on “What America’s Thinking.”

“They don’t trust China, and they are concerned that deals have been rigged in other countries’ favors,” she continued.

“And that fact that he stands up and says ‘we’ve gotta change this,’ probably helps not just with his base, but with a broader swath of public opinion,” she said.

Trump last month fulfilled his campaign promise to renegotiate the North Atlantic Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

A CNN poll released in October found that 43 percent of Americans said they approved of Trump’s handling of trade following his announcement of a new NAFTA deal, while 52 percent said Trump was doing a good job on keeping the promises he made during the 2016 campaign.
