Emery’s New Arsenal Team Can Now Compete With The Big Boys In England

Unai Emery became Arsenal‘s manager just over a year ago, and since then he has guided the Gunners to the Europa League final and fifth place in the Premier League.

Yet, despite these positives, Emery is ready to take Arsenal to the next level. The former Sevilla head coach has brought in some exciting players who are ready to transform the team.

On Thursday, Arsenal announced the signing of Nicolas Pepe from Lille for a club record fee of 80 million euros.

Pepe was involved in 33 goals for Lille last season, scoring 22 himself. He joins an attacking force of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette, who combined were involved in 66 goals for Arsenal last season.

The result is an attacking trio capable of scoring or creating around 100 goals, and one that will be feared by defences in the Premier League next season.

Elsewhere, there is a new dimension to Arsenal‘s midfield. The departure of Aaron Ramsey to Juventus left a gap, but this has been addressed after the arrival of Dani Ceballos on loan from Real Madrid.

Ceballos has quality, can control the midfield, and comes from deep to support attacks. With Lucas Torreira and Granit Xhaka sitting a little deeper in midfield, Emery can use Ceballos to great effect.

This brings into question the role of former Real Madrid playmaker Mesut Ozil, who wants to remain an important part of Emery‘s team but will now have to compete with the Spain star.

There are doubts in defence, however. With Laurent Koscielny out of the reckoning, Emery has Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis Papastathopoulos as options at centre-back, although Mustafi has been linked with a move to Monaco.

Arsenal have already signed promising centre-back William Saliba for 30 million euros from Saint-Etienne, but the player will stay at the French club on loan for this season.

Defensive stability is key if Arsenal are to compete near the top of the Premier League, but it will prove difficult to add a meaningful addition after the club’s hefty sum spent on Pepe.
