Denmark Send Bale’s Wales Out Of EURO 2020

Denmark’s Euro 2020 journey will continue into the quarter-finals after they beat Wales 4-0 in Amsterdam on Saturday evening.

The Danes have become many fans’ second favourite team this summer following the health scare suffered by Christian Eriksen and their subsequent loss against Finland to open the scoring, and they’ll now meet either the Czech Republic or the Netherlands in the last eight.

Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale found himself on the ball a lot in the early stages, but he and Juventus’ Aaron Ramsey’s best efforts weren’t enough to do any harm before Denmark got themselves on top.

Before half an hour was played, Kasper Dolberg put Denmark ahead. Serie A pair Joakim Maehle and Mikkel Damsgaard combined before the Sampdoria playmaker found Dolberg, who drove in an excellent shot from the edge of the area.

From there, Wales’ evening only grew increasingly complicated and they were lucky to get in at the break just one goal behind.

Denmark’s lead was doubled shortly after the restart through Dolberg again. Neco Williams, who had only come on for Connor Roberts late in the first half, made a mess of what looked to be a simple clearance and, the ball falling to Dolberg, his error was punished as the Dane doubled his day’s tally.

Denmark were comfortable from there. Andreas Cornelius came on late to cause havoc, and Martin Braithwaite should have added a third late on but could only find the post before Joachim Anderson did the same on the subsequent rebound.

Atalanta’s Maehle added his second goal of the tournament as the 90 minutes drew to a close, taking advantage of space as Wales flooded forward, by firing in at the near post.

Wales, for the second time at Euro 2020, ended the game with 10 men as Liverpool’s Harry Wilson saw red after losing his head and cynically fouling Maehle in stoppage time.

Braithwaite put some final gloss on the result with Denmark’s fourth in stoppage time.
