Denmark Open With 1-0 Win As Peru Pay Penalty
Denmark capitalized on a missed penalty, awarded by the Video Assistant Referee system, to beat Peru 1-0 in the World Cup opener for both teams on Saturday.
Yussuf Poulsen scored the only goal in the second half and Kasper Schmeichel made it stand with a number of saves in the Group C match at the Mordovia Arena in Saransk.
Peru’s Christian Cueva fired his penalty well over goal just before half-time after it was awarded by referee Bakary Gassama following a VAR review.
Poulsen finished off a counter-attack in the 59th minute and Schmeichel preserved the win by saving with his foot late against Jefferson Farfan.
