Court Sends Land Racketeer To Prison In Maiduguri

The Maiduguri Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Tuesday, 3 January, 2023 secured the conviction and sentencing of one Alhaji Ibrahim Amodu to one year imprisonment.

Amodu was re-arraigned on November 10, 2022 on a one count amended charge before Justice Umaru Fadawu of the Borno State High Court, Maiduguri for cheating to the tune of N800,000.00 (Eight Hundred Thousand Naira).

The charge reads: “That you, Alhaji Ibrahim Amodu, sometime in April, 2016 in Maiduguri, Borno State within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, dishonestly induced Ahmed Alhaji Modu to deliver to you the sum of N800,000.00 (Eight Hundred Thousand Naira) under the guise that the said amount represent payment for a plot of land with Certificate No. BO/5154 laying and situated at Pompomari Ward Layout and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 320 (a) and Punishable under Section 322 of the Penal Code Cap 102 Laws of Borno State.”

The defendant pleaded guilty to the charge.

Counsel for the prosecution, A. Ayanshola led one Amadi Kelvin, an operative of the EFCC to review the facts of the case and urged the court to convict the defendant as charged.

Justice Fadawu thereafter convicted and sentenced the defendant to one year imprisonment with an option of Three Hundred Thousand Naira fine.
