There was something of a Madrid derby as Group H of the World Cup qualifiers got underway on Wednesday, with Jan Oblak’s Slovenia edging Luka Modric’s Croatia 1-0.

The Atletico Madrid goalkeeper had been busy, reacting well to save from Nikola Vlasic, even before Sandi Lovric’s early goal gave Slovenia the lead with a quarter of an hour on the clock.

Both Sime Vrsaljko and Modric played 90 minutes for Croatia, but the night will be remembered for Modric levelling Darijo Srna’s record of 134 Croatia caps. Modric will beat the former Shakhtar Donetsk full-back’s record when Croatia face Cyprus on Saturday.
