Chelsea Lose To Porto At Home But Through On Aggregate

Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat to Porto on Tuesday night wasn’t enough to stop them from advancing to the semi finals of the Champions League.

The game at Sevilla’s Estadio Sanchez Pizjuan was relatively uneventful, but the Portuguese side took too long to really test their Premier League opponents and didn’t find a breakthrough until Mehdi Taremi’s stunning overhead kick in stoppage time.

Chelsea’s 2-0 win in the first leg a week ago, also played at the Pizjuan, meant that Thomas Tuchel’s side had a very clear job on their hands – avoid losing by three goals. Given their record, though, that was never likely to happen, and they stood firm for much of the night.

It wasn’t until stoppage time that Sergio Conceicao’s side found their way to goal, and Edouard Mendy hadn’t really been tested throughout the night. There was little the goalkeeper could do to keep out Taremi’s phenomenal bicycle kick, which flew into his top corner.

The 2012 winners are now into the semi-finals for the first time since 2014, and will meet either Real Madrid or Liverpool in the final four.
