Sevilla enjoyed a historic night at Old Trafford as Wissam Ben Yedder’s brace was enough to knock Manchester United out of the Champions League, despite Romelu Lukaku’s consolation goal.
The Spanish side dominated throughout and humiliated Jose Mourinho in the United dugout.
The Red Devils returned to the competition after winning the Europa League last year and have spent 350 million euros in the past two seasons alone.
Paul Pogba (105m euros), Henrikh Mkhitaryan (42m euros, but he has now left the club), Eric Bailly (38m euros), Romelu Lukaku (84.7m euros), Nemanja Matic (44.7m euros) and Victor Lindelof (35m euros) all formed part of the project.
Now they are left without any hope of winning the league title and have been knocked out at the last 16 stage of the Champions League.
Ben Yedder was the hero for Vincenzo Montella’s side with a brace after replacing Luis Muriel as a substitute, whilst Steven N’Zonzi also produced a memorable display on his return to England.
It was a historic night in Manchester, but unfortunately for those who sanctioned the 350m euros of spending it was the 2,000 travelling Sevilla fans who were singing at the final whistle.
