The Estadio Wanda Metropolitano had been feeling more like home of late but the Atletico Madrid faithful suffered a second poor day out in a few days as Girona took a 1-1 draw from their LaLiga encounter on Sunday.
On top in the first-half, Angel Correa had an opening saved by goalkeeper Bono after a penalty appeal was waved away and Antoine Griezmann stepped up to put them ahead after 34 minutes.
With Girona unable to clear their lines, Diego Costa latched onto a dink over the top and smartly diverted the ball around the onrushing keeper for Griezmann to tap home.
Yannick Carrasco missed the chance to make it two before the visitors pounced. A scramble in the area led to Koke’s desperate hoof that would have cleared the roof were it given any direction, and instead it landed for Bernardo to play a sumptuous ball in that Portu finished calmly.
Soon enough, Diego Simeone had thrown on Vitolo but Atletico remained at arm’s length, a feat Barcelona are also achieving when it comes to the LaLiga table where Los Rojiblancos are eight points off the top.
