The continued outbreak of COVID-19 cases in the Premier League is becoming a major concern for the league, especially in the wake of a governmental admission that lockdown restrictions may become even more stringent, and the clash between Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur has now been postponed.

Villa have seen an outbreak of positive tests for the virus in the ranks over the past week, and as such their match on Wednesday cannot go ahead, as both clubs announced on Monday afternoon.

“Following Aston Villa’s request to reschedule the match due to the number of players and staff who have tested positive for COVID-19, the Premier League has no choice but to reschedule the fixture,” read a statement released by the league.

According to the club itself, Aston Villa have been in constant communication with the Premier League and the Department of Public Health since the closure of their training facility on Thursday.

Tottenham, though, will still be in action though, as their postponed match against Fulham from December 30 will now be played on Wednesday, pushing the Cottagers’ clash with Chelsea back from next Friday to Saturday.

In the period between January 4 and January 10, the Premier League reported 36 positive cases of COVID-19, although that was actually two fewer than the previous week.
