Arsenal Beat Southampton, Move Into Premier League Top Half

Arsenal avenged Saturday’s FA Cup loss to Southampton on Tuesday evening, as the Gunners picked up a 3-1 Premier League win away at St. Mary’s Stadium.

Having been beaten by an early goal over the weekend, Mikel Arteta’s side would have been fearing the worst as Stuart Armstrong put the Saints ahead after three minutes, but the Londoners fought back to claim three important points.

A well worked corner routine got Southampton in front. James Ward-Prowse found Armstrong unmarked, arriving late into the penalty area, and his half-volley beat Bernd Leno.

But Nicolas Pepe levelled in the eighth minute. Arsenal won the ball back high up the pitch, Pepe was put through by Granit Xhaka and he calmly slotted home.

Bukayo Saka gave the Gunners their lead, punishing some rash goalkeeping from Alex McCarthy. The ‘keeper raced out of his penalty area to close Saka down, but the youngster strolled past him to tap into an open goal.

The third came through Alexandre Lacazette in the final 20 minutes, as the Frenchman tapped in from close range after having the chance laid on a plate by Saka.
